Classic somatotypes are a rough guide, not destiny - resistance training and nutrition can substantially change body composition within your frame.

How to Use the Body Type Calculator

  1. Measure chest/bust, waist, hips and wrist circumference.
  2. Enter sex, height and the measurements above.
  3. View your estimated body type plus its training and diet tendencies.

Formulas Used

Waist-to-hip ratio = waist / hips (apple vs pear distribution)

Waist-to-height ratio = waist / height (>0.5 suggests central adiposity)

Frame index = height(cm) / wrist circumference(cm) determines frame size

Frequently Asked Questions

Are somatotypes scientifically valid?

The original 1940s somatotype theory is outdated as a strict classification, but the measurement ratios used here (WHR, WHtR, frame size) are still useful health indicators.

What does my waist-to-height ratio mean?

A ratio under 0.5 is generally considered healthy. Above that suggests increased cardiometabolic risk regardless of overall BMI category.

Can I change my body type?

You cannot change bone structure or where fat preferentially stores, but resistance training and nutrition can substantially change muscle mass and composition within your frame.
